Every bride has one feature she is quietly focused on, and it usually is not the one people compliment. A high forehead, a wide jaw, a small face, a long neck. Hair can address all of these, gracefully, without anyone noticing the strategy.
High forehead: a soft fringe or a side-swept front section that lands on the diagonal. Avoid a severe slicked center part, which draws the eye up. A little volume at the crown and softness at the temples balances the proportion.
Wide jaw or square face: volume at the crown and softness around the cheekbone, with the narrowest point of the style at the jawline. A low bun with a face-framing piece does this beautifully. Avoid a blunt chin-length bob shape, which echoes the jaw.
Small face: too much volume makes a small face look hidden. Keep the silhouette closer to the head and let the dress and veil carry the drama. A sleek low chignon is almost always the answer.
Long neck: an updo with a low nape and a soft edge is stunning here, and a veil placed at the crown draws the eye along the neck beautifully. Half-up styles also work well.
Round face: height at the crown and length through the jaw, either with a long pony or with hair down. Avoid volume at the ears, which widens the middle.
The important caveat: these are proportions, not rules, and a bride who loves a style should wear it. Confidence reads better in photographs than any correction. Inquire with your date and we will look at your face shape together at the preview.
