A bride with very long hair has options most brides do not, and one problem most brides never think about: weight.
Long hair is heavy. Past mid-back, an updo has to carry several pounds of hair, and that weight pulls at the pins, flattens the crown, and creates the headache-before-dinner situation nobody wants. The technique changes accordingly: more anchor points, a wider base of support, and a shape that distributes weight across the whole head rather than concentrating it at one gather point.
What works beautifully on long hair: a low braided chignon, which distributes weight at the nape. A wrapped bun, built in layers. A half-up with the length brought forward over one shoulder, which looks spectacular in photographs and takes weight off the back of the head entirely. A single long, low pony is genuinely the most comfortable option for a very long-haired bride, and it photographs with more drama than most updos.
What to avoid: a high, tight updo with a lot of hair. It will be uncomfortable by the reception, and comfort shows in your face in photographs.
One more consideration: if your hair is long and fine, the weight is not the issue but the slip is. Long fine hair slides out of pins, so I use a texture foundation at the gather point before building the shape.
Very long hair is an asset, not a difficulty. Inquire with your date and tell me your length; it changes the appointment.
