Bridal Hair With a Strapless Gown: The Neckline Rule

Strapless is the most common neckline in bridal and the one brides most often style against. The instinct is to let hair down and soft so the shoulders are not too bare. That instinct usually works against you.

When there is no fabric between your jaw and your shoulder, the eye needs somewhere to travel. Hair falling in front of the collarbone creates a horizontal line exactly where you do not want one, and it shortens the neck in every straight-on portrait. Hair that clears the shoulder entirely, in an updo or a swept side, gives you a long vertical line from ear to collarbone. It reads taller and more elegant, and it photographs that way too.

My default for strapless is a low, slightly off-center chignon with a clean crown, plus one deliberate soft element: a face-framing piece, a small wave at the temple, a fine tendril at the ear. One. Not a fringe of them.

The veil question comes up constantly. On a strapless gown, a veil placed at the crown adds a second vertical, which is exactly right. A veil placed low, at the nape, adds a horizontal, which is exactly wrong. Comb it high and slightly back so it sits behind the shoulder line instead of on it.
