Bridal Hair and a Spray Tan: The Timing That Saves Your Photos

Every October I get the same text: "I'm getting a spray tan three days before. Will it mess up my hair?" Short answer: no, if the timing is right. Slightly longer answer: the timing is almost never right, and fixing it costs nothing.

The issue isn't the tan itself, it's the shower. Spray tans need to develop and then be rinsed, and most formulas ask you to wait four to eight hours before washing. That rinse is a wash day, and wash day is the enemy of a style that needs grip. Brides who tan two days out end up washing their hair at midnight, sleeping on it damp, and arriving at the chair with hair that's either too clean to hold or too textured to smooth.

My recommendation: tan five days out, minimum. That gives the color time to settle, gives you a normal wash cycle before the wedding, and keeps your hair on its usual schedule. The tan will still be at full depth. Spray tans don't fade meaningfully in five days if you're moisturizing.

Second detail nobody mentions: spray tan solution on the hairline. A technician will shield your hair, but residue at the temples and behind the ears is common. Wash your hair the next morning with a clarifying shampoo once, then return to your normal routine. Buildup at the hairline is what makes an updo sit slightly forward all day.

Third: your scalp. Spray tan on a dry, unwashed scalp can itch under pins. Wash the night before the wedding if your hair holds well clean, or the morning of if it doesn't. You know your hair. Trust that.
