Here is a decision most brides do not know they are making: whether their hair will match the room or contrast with it. It sounds abstract. It changes everything about how you look in photographs.
Matching means the hair extends the mood. A soft garden ceremony, soft romantic hair. A black-tie ballroom, polished sculpted hair. A beach, texture and movement. This is the safe choice and almost always right.
Contrasting means the hair deliberately breaks the mood. Sleek, minimal hair in an ornate ballroom. A loose, undone wave at a very formal reception. It is harder to pull off and it is what fashion editors do, because contrast reads as confidence.
When I recommend contrast it is usually for a bride whose dress is elaborate and whose hair should step back. A heavily beaded gown with a big updo is a lot of decoration competing. The same gown with a clean low knot looks expensive.
The reverse is also true: a simple slip dress in a formal room can carry dramatic hair, because the hair is doing the work the dress is not.
The way to decide is simple. Look at your dress and the room, and ask what is already loud. Then let your hair be the quiet part, or be the one deliberate disruption.
