Almost nobody has a symmetrical hairline. The cowlick is not a flaw, it is a growth pattern, and the reason it fights you is that you have been styling against it instead of with it.
The solution: first, find the natural fall. Wet your hair, comb it straight back with no product, and see which way the front wants to go. Nine times out of ten there is an off-center part that the hairline is already suggesting. Work with that instead of forcing a center part.
Second, use heat to change direction, not product. A cowlick is trained by drying it in the opposite direction while it is damp, then flipping it back once dry. It will hold for a day. Product alone will not move it.
Third, plan the style around the stubborn zone. If the front left will not lie flat, do not build a wet-look style that requires it to. A soft side sweep, a deep side part, or a style with volume at the front all work better than a slicked center part.
Fourth, if you want a truly sleek look, accept that it needs a strong-hold product applied to damp hair and dried flat with tension. It is achievable, it just requires technique rather than hope.
