Wedding Hair at The Breakers: Holding a Grand Room Without Big Hair

The Breakers is the most famous wedding venue in Florida, and brides approach it with a mix of excitement and fear. It is enormous, it is historic, and it has hosted a hundred years of weddings. The fear is usually about looking small in a big room.

Here is how I handle it. The Breakers' scale means tall ceilings and long sightlines, and hair should have enough presence to hold up in a wide photograph. That does not mean big hair. It means a strong silhouette: a clean chignon with visible architecture, a polished half-up with real height at the crown, a low knot with a defined part. Small, soft, undecided shapes disappear in that room.

The second factor is light. The Breakers' interior is warm and golden, and the ocean-facing rooms run bright and cool. A style built for the ballroom will read slightly soft outdoors, and a style built for the terrace will read slightly harsh inside. I plan for the terrace portraits and soften the outline for the ballroom, which is the opposite of what most brides expect.

Third, logistics. The property is vast. Getting from a suite to a beach ceremony to a ballroom can take twenty minutes with a trolley. I build buffer into the schedule and never tell the bride how much, because knowing makes her anxious.

Fourth, the party. Nine services at The Breakers means two artists and a clear start time. Do not let anyone schedule you at 8 a.m. for a 6 p.m. ceremony.
