Best Hair Length for a Bridal Updo (And When to Cut)

The range is narrower than you think

November 16, 2026

Nape length is the least glamorous variable in bridal hair and the one most likely to make an updo look wrong. Too long and a chignon sags into a knot. Too short and there is nothing to pin. If you are considering a haircut in the months before the wedding, this is the guide we wish every bride read first.

The sweet spot for most updos is somewhere between shoulder and mid-back. That range gives enough length to loop, twist, and fold without so much weight that the shape drops. If your hair is longer than mid-back, we can still build a beautiful chignon, but it needs an interior structure, which means more pins and more time.

If your hair is above the shoulder, updos are built differently. A short bob can wear a low, tucked chignon with the ends pinned under. It can wear a half-up. It cannot wear a high, voluminous bun without extensions, and that is the honest answer.

If you want to cut before the wedding, do it eight weeks out or earlier. That gives the cut time to soften and gives us a preview appointment on the final length. A fresh blunt cut two weeks before the wedding is harder to style than one that has relaxed for two months.

If you are growing it out, do not aim for length you cannot maintain. A bride with healthy mid-back hair always photographs better than a bride with damaged hip-length hair, and the extensions option exists precisely because we do not need you to grow it.

Our Bride Experience is $1,000 and includes a preview where we test the real length. The investment page covers details, and inquire with your current length.
