A bride recently asked whether she needed a curling iron if she already owns an Airwrap. I said it depends entirely on whether she wants a style that lasts past lunch, and then explained why.
The Airwrap is a genuinely excellent tool and I use one in my kit. It dries and shapes at once, which is why it is fast, and it is dramatically less damaging than a hot barrel because it uses airflow rather than a 400-degree surface. For a bride who wants soft, everyday waves in fifteen minutes, nothing beats it.
What it does not do as well: hard-set structure. The waves it creates are softer and looser, and in Florida humidity they relax faster than a barrel-set wave does. If you want a bridal style with real hold, you need the higher heat and the tighter shape a curling iron provides, because that is what gives hair a memory strong enough to fight the air.
So the practical answer for brides. Use the Airwrap for prep, for drying with shape, for the days between events. Use a curling iron for the wedding day itself, or let your artist work with either but know that the wand set will hold longer.
There is also an argument for the Airwrap on the honeymoon, where you want speed and no damage in a hotel bathroom with a converter.
